
Stefanie Batten Bland, a 2023 Creative Capital Awardee, exhibits a fusion of African American and European influences in her dance-theatre, film, and installation work. Recently featured at the Guggenheim, Batten Bland investigates cultural symbols with emotional yet accessible choreography carrying a powerful message. She established her dance company in France while at the Paris Opéra Comique. Upon returning to New York, she received support from Mikhail Baryshnikov. Batten Bland has danced with renowned companies and served as movement director at the Public Theater.
Internationally acclaimed, her work has been presented globally. An Assistant Professor at Montclair State, she creates dance films shown at festivals worldwide. Through her diverse, boundary-pushing artistry, Batten Bland embodies the creative spirit of her alma mater, Goddard College.
