Goddard Sustainability Progress Report - July 2013

Energy Efficiency and Reduced Carbon Emissions

As a result of projects such as using more LED lights, turning off lights, installing smaller hot water heaters, and reduced use of the walk in cooler, we have reduced our electricity usage by 40,000 KWH since last year. The library reduced electricity use by 2300 KWH in one month by turning off lights not in use. Our oil usage for the winter of 2012-13 was 207 gallons less than the previous winter. Since our original inventory in 2007, we have reduced the use of heating oil by 31% (from 62,268 gal. to 43,582 gal.) and the use of electricity by 30% (from 730 to 508 MWH). We would like to continue to conserve energy wherever possible and welcome your ideas.

Food Service

We have ended our contracts with Sysco and Pepsi making this our first semester with a corporate free kitchen. A new vending machine from Fresh Vending will supply cold drinks. Our chef, Paul Somerset, is working to make the food served in the cafeteria 100% sourced in Vermont. The garden is currently supplying all of our herbs and salad greens. We have planted hundreds
of tomato and squash plants that we expect will produce around 1200 lbs. of tomatoes and 1500 lbs. of winter squash. This should provide enough preserved tomatoes and winter squash to carry us through the winter. All our baked goods are made in the Goddard kitchen from whole wheat grown at Butterworks Farm in Westfield, VT, flour milled at Champlain Mills, and Cabot butter. Joey Klein at Littlewood Farm in Plainfield will be growing several crops specifically for the Goddard kitchen this season, especially kale, broccoli, and late season vegetables. We continue to get produce from other local farms, Two Rivers Center in Montpelier, and Black River Produce in Springfield, VT. We get tea from The Vermont Liberty Tea Co. that grows and packs its own teas and herbs in Waterbury, VT. We are using a new recyclable to-go container made from waste water bottles by Bottle Box in California and distributed by White River Paper Company in Vermont.

Missing Meals

Please let the Help Desk know if you will not be at a meal during the residency so that we don’t prepare food that goes to waste.

Clean Energy Fund

A voluntary $10/semester clean energy fee has been set up to engage students as stakeholders in the advancement of sustainability and renewable energy at the Vermont campus. The fee is collected at pre-registration, and students have started contributing to the fund. The fund was initiated after a March 2013 survey of students found that 73% of respondents would donate to a voluntary clean energy fund. The fund is kept in an account to be used only for sustainability and clean energy projects and is not part of the general budget. The Goddard sustainability committee contacts students through student council representatives to gather input on proposals and determine how the fund should be used. The fund can support projects such as a solar thermal system to help heat water, on demand hot water heaters to reduce standby losses, updated lighting and equipment, continued building retrofits to reduce our use of heating oil, and enlarging our campus vegetable garden.

Green Revolving Fund

In January 2012, we started a small green revolving fund that we are using to support energy upgrades. A green revolving fund is “funded” by the cost savings resulting from using more efficient energy and provides an ongoing dedicated source of capital for sustainability projects that continue to save money. In 2012, we used about $2000 on more energy efficient lighting and this money is being paid back through savings. Future projects could include a solar thermal system, on demand hot water heaters, and additional energy efficiency upgrades.

Reduced Mowing

We are mowing some areas of the campus less often and other areas not at all to reduce fuel use and CO2 emissions, and to protect wildlife habitats.

Biomass Heating Facility

We are working through the permitting process to build a biomass heating facility that would heat the campus using a wood chip boiler. Similar biomass facilities at
other colleges have reduced the use of heating oil by 90%/year.

Travel to Campus

There is a ride share board at the College's intranet site for students, staff and faculty at under Goddard Community, Ride Share Postings.


Goddard has joined the Vermont Campus Sustainability Network and meets twice a year with sustainability representatives from the other colleges in VT to share ideas and practices.

Climate Leadership Award

On June 5, Goddard was one of ten colleges to receive the National Climate Leadership award from Second Nature, the parent organization of the American
College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment.

Plans for FY 2014

We are moving ahead with sustainability education, increasing energy efficiency, reducing paper waste, reducing electricity consumption, enlarging our campus garden, and creating a carpooling network.

Sustainability Listserv

The sustainability listserv begun in Spring 2008 to send weekly messages about local and global news and resources to the Goddard community now has 370 members. If you would like to be added, you can let us know by commenting with your email address.


We welcome your input about ways to further integrate sustainability into all areas of the college.


The sustainability team was formed in 2007 when Goddard’s then president Mark Schulman signed the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment. We conducted a carbon inventory, created a climate action plan and began working to reduce emissions and to integrate sustainability into all aspects of college activities. The carbon inventory, climate action plan, resources for creating a carbon reduction plan, and previous progress reports are on under Goddard Community, College Planning, Sustainability. Our goal is to be carbon neutral in fuels burned on campus and electricity usage by 2020, and we are also working to increase energy efficiency and reduce consumption and waste. To keep the community informed of our progress and to invite your participation, we have been reporting on our progress every six months.
