Learn how to use the Eliot D. Pratt Library Catalog like a pro with these short introductory videos on key functions and fun features. Please note: These videos were not created using our catalog, so while the look of the catalog is different and some of the features may be different, the instruction is the same.

    Introduction to the Library Catalog

Introduction to the Library Catalog is a basic overview of the catalog. Keep in mind that “Place Hold” is “Place Request” in our catalog and is not available during the Plainfield residencies or after the semester has ended. You will not see the renew (we do not allow renewals) or “Do You Mean” (because it’s not working well yet) features. Other features should be the same. Please Note: if you change your messaging you are still responsible for returning all items on time. Notices are simply a courtesy.

    Logging in to the Catalog

Logging in to the Catalog explains where to login and the benefit of doing so. Please Note: This video is from another library, so the username/password details are not relevant. Your user/pass is your 6-digit Goddard ID number and the password you chose at registration.

    Basic Search

Basic Search shows how to perform a basic search in the library catalog.

    Advanced Search

Advanced Search shows how to perform an advanced search in the library catalog.

    Subject Search

Subject Heading Search shows how to maximize search using the system’s formal subjects and get tips on searching.

    Navigating Search Results

Navigating Search Results shows you what do do with your search results.

    Shelf Browser Tool

Shelf Browser Tool allows you to see what’s on the shelf, just as if you were standing right in front of it. Learn how the Virtual Shelf Browsing tool works.

    Making Requests

Requesting Materials in the Library Catalog is easy, shown in this video and in our separate tutorial How To Request Materials from the Eliot D. Pratt Library Catalog. In the video this is called “Placing Holds” but you will use it to “Place Requests” on both items that are available (we will send you the book immediately) and checked out (we will either get a copy through Interlibrary Loan or buy an additional copy). This function is turned off for Plainfield residencies and at the end of the semester.

    Reading History

Your Reading History shows all the items you’ve checked out and how to find and make the best use of that list.

    Privacy Settings

Your Privacy shows you how to select the level of history available on your account. Unless you tell it not to, the catalog will keep your reading history in perpetuity. This video will show you how to restrict that and clear your history if it’s not desired.

    Billing and Charges

Your Fines/Charges shows you where to see charges on your account. We do not charge fines but any charges/credits for long overdue/lost materials will appear in the “Fines” area of your account. This video will show you how to see these charges.

    Creating Lists

Creating Lists in the Library Catalog teaches you how to create and use lists.

    Star Ratings

Star Rating Library Materials shows you how to rate materials you have read by giving them 1-5 stars in the catalog.

    Leaving Comments

Leaving Comments on Library Materials allows you to share your thoughts on materials that you have borrowed. Comments are moderated by the library and will not show up immediately in the catalog. We request that respectful language is used so that all members of the community can enjoy your comments.

    Tagging Materials

Tagging Materials in the Library Catalog allows you to contribute your own subjects & keywords to the catalog by tagging and see how to browse tags. New tags are moderated by the library and will not show up immediately in the catalog. We request that respectful language is used so that all members of the community can use your tags.

    Subscribing to RSS Feeds

Subscribe to RSS Feeds teaches you how to subscribe to your common searches. Please Note: RSS is not available with Chrome. Be sure to use Firefox when subscribing to searches. RSS in Plain English by Common Craft will teach you all about RSS feeds and how to use them!
