Goddard Awarded Grant to Help Bolster Vermont Internships

Plainfield, Vt.  — Goddard College today announced it received a $25,035 grant from the Vermont Department of Labor to support internships for students in its Master of Arts in Psychology and Counseling program.

Funds from the grant will provide Goddard College students who live and carry out their internships in Vermont with need-based stipends for their fieldwork during the spring and fall 2013 semesters. Each semester, as many as 15 students are eligible to receive the funds.

The funds will also support an assessment of the internship program.

“Students who participate in internship opportunities often have a significant advantage in securing a job after graduation,” Labor Commissioner Annie Noonan said. “This is in part because employers get to know them and see their abilities, and also because they are able to demonstrate to employers that their education has prepared them for the world of work.”

Goddard College students have recently interned at the Central Vermont Community Action Council, Washington County Mental Health Services, the Clara Martin Center and the Vermont State Hospital, among other organizations.

According to Goddard College’s 2011 survey of their MA in Psychology and Counseling graduates that year, 82.1 percent were working in their degree fields of study.

“This innovative partnership between Goddard and the state of Vermont creates a wonderful opportunity for our students to apply their studies directly in the workplace,” Academic Dean Jacqueline Hayes said.  “This internship opportunity fits beautifully with Goddard’s educational model, which stresses learning through direct experience in local communities.”

The 2013 spring semester for the low-residency MA in Psychology & Counseling program starts in April, with an application deadline of March 5, 2013.
