Welcome to the monthly MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts program news blog! This is a regular avenue for the public to learn about the achievements and good work of our alumni, students, and faculty.

ALUMNI

Riva Weinstein (MFAIA-VT ’14) will present Walking in Circles of Art/Life/Nature, an 18-minute walking meditation on Saturday, April 19th, 2014. And on Sunday, July 13 she will create small, spontaneous, site-specific, trailside installations in collaboration with Linda Byrne. Both works invite community participation and direct experience of the natural world for “Art in the Wild” at the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum Outdoor Discovery Center, Cornwall, New York, April 19 to August 30, 2014.
Sungsook Setton (MFAIA-VT ’08) is has work in the “Art of Ink in America: Gesture and Beyond” at Alexey von Schlippe Gallery at the University of Connecticut.
Cory Wanamaker (MFAIA-VT ’02) has achieved numerous milestones in recent years. In 2006-2007, he received a Fulbright Fellowship for International Education Exchange in the United Kingdom. In 2009, he joined the art faculty of the Anglo-American School of Moscow. And after moving in 2012 to Prague and making art full time in the Airy Hill Studio, he has recently joined the Art Faculty of the Anglo-American University in Prague.

STUDENTS

Leslie Goldberg (MFAIA-WA ’15) has begun a vegan humor blog featuring her drawings and writings called Vicious Vegan. The site had over 600 hits in only the first weeks, and Leslie expects to have a book’s worth of material within the year.

David Sokal (MFAIA-WA ’14) won first place in the art competition, “Nude Attitude,” at Peoria Art Guild with an image made in response to a dialogue of ideas with faculty advisor Sharon Siskin last semester around the nature of political, personal, and “objective” expression in art.

FACULTY

JuPong Lin will have her book review of The Media Ecosystem, by Antonio Lopez, published in the Journal of Media Literacy next month. She will also be presenting at the TEDx conference, “Living in the Anthropocene,” on April 21 at Evergreen State College.

Petra Kuppers will lead a seminar, “Disability Culture Pedagogy,” at University of Sydney’s Department of Media and Communications on Friday, March 28, 1:00-2:30pm. Petra will share material from her forthcoming study guide for undergraduates, Studying Disability Arts and Culture: An Introduction (Palgrave, forthcoming 2014) and discuss access, politics, embodied exercises and arts-based teaching strategies.

Petra will also exhibit, with the Olimpias artist group, work from the interdisciplinary project, Salamander, as part of “Senses of Care: Mediated Ability and Interdependence,” an exhibit at University of California, San Diego, from April 10 to June 13. The Olimpias will also perform at the gallery on April 30.
Petra is also currently Artist in Residence at the Bundanon Trust in Australia.
Devora Neumark is participating in the “Nonviolence a Weapon of the Strong: Advancing Nonviolence, Spirituality and Social Transformation” conference at Saint Paul University (Ottawa, May 8-11, 2014) as part of the panel “Micro Movement towards a Nonviolent World”. Devora’s presentation is titled: “Performing Nonviolence: Sound, Story and Public Interactions”.
Devora is also participating with Jennifer van de Pol in the Association for Environmental Studies and Sciences conference, “Welcome to the Anthropocene: From Global Challenge to Planetary Stewardship,” at Pace University (New York City, June 11-14, 2014). Together they will facilitate a half-day workshop titled “Experience Valuing Machine: Ecology, Art and the Practice of Presence.”
Ruth Wallen is participating in the exhibition, “Labor-Migrant-Gulf, currently on view at Southwestern College, Chula Vista, California. The exhibition is part of a international effort, Gulf Labor, to raise awareness of conditions of migrant workers constructing museums in Abu Dhabi (gulflabor.org). Additionally she contributed to Binational Association of Schools of Communication (Binacom’s) biennial encounter organizing a panel on the conference theme, “Sustainability, Innovation and Communication,” and presenting her research on photojournalism in the border region for a panel, “Border Coverage: a look into the future.” (weblink)
