Faculty:
MFAW-VT faculty member Kenny Fries‘s recently published In the Province of the Gods was chosen by Passport Magazine as a Best Gift Book for 2017. Catapult published “Meeting MM:  On Friendship and Disability in Japan,” an adapted excerpt from the book. Another excerpt was published at Accessible JapanThe Japan Times, Japan’s leading English language newspaper, published a feature on Kenny. Interviews with Kenny, one by acclaimed writer Joan Silber for Epiphany Magazine, and by Elizabeth Foulke for the current issue of the Ocean State Review also were published.  Kenny received a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts to work on his next book, Stumbling over History:  Aktion T4, Disability, and the Holocaust.
MFAW-VT faculty member Sherri L. Smith‘s novel Pasadena received the 2017 Southern California Independent Booksellers Association Book Award – Young Adult. This is the second SCIBA award for Sherri in as many years.  Last year her book The Toymaker’s Apprentice won in the middle grade category.
An illustrated account, by Alicia Rodriguez, of a reading by MFAW-WA faculty member Bhanu Kapil at the ICA (London) earlier this year, appeared in the British arts magazine, Orlando.
MFAW-WA faculty member Beatrix Gates was a featured poet in WORD: Blue Hill’s First Literary Arts Festival in Blue Hill, Maine. Bea and Electa Arenal did a bilingual reading from The Poems of Vikram Babu by Jesus Aguado at the Cannery, in  South Penobscot, Maine. Bea and Electa were also interviewed on WERUs “Gracias a la Vida” with Jim Fisher. ​ ​
MFAW-VT faculty member Douglas A. Martin ‘s new book, Acker, was launched at Callicoon Fine Arts in New York City.  The launch included readings by Douglas, as well as Wayne Koestenbaum, Dorothea Lasky, and Darcey Steinke.
MFAW-WA faculty member Micheline Aharonian Marcom launched The Brick House, published by Awst Press, at City Lights Books in San Francisco, CA, and at Laurel Books in Oakland, CA.
MFAW-VT faculty member Deborah Brevoort launched The Poetry of Pizza and The Velvet Weapon: Two Comedies, published by No Passport Press, at The Drama Book Shop in New York City.
Alumni and Students:
MFAW-VT student Jeffrey Solomon‘s documentary play De Novo, about an unaccompanied minor in deportation proceedings was remounted Off-Broadway in association with New York Theater Workshop.
MFAW-VT student Kaye Newbury‘s poem, “Learning”, was published in The Healing Muse, A Journal of Literary & Visual Arts, Fall 2017 issue.
MFAW-VT student Jennifer Skura’s play was read at Tangent Theater‘s NEWvember Play
Festival
in Tivoli, NY.
MFAW-VT student Ni’ja Whitson was a featured writer as part of the BAM Next Wave Art Series, Wendy’s Subway Reading Room.  Ni’Ja shared the evening with Mariana Valencia and Yvonne Rainer.
