Faculty:
MFAW-WA faculty member Micheline Aharonian Marcom‘s novel Three Apples Fell from Heaven will be adapted by Motorcycle Diaries writer José Rivera and directed by Shekhar Kapur. This will be the first film from Disruptive Narrative, a new social justice storytelling production which launched at Cannes as part of the Refugee Voices in Film day.
This summer, MFAW-VT faculty member Susan Kim will be facilitating the inaugural Sesame Writers’ Room, a fellowship opportunity in New York City from the creators of Sesame Street. The fellowship is intended to develop fresh writing talent in children’s television from underrepresented racial backgrounds.
MFAW-VT faculty member Kenny Fries‘s poems will be included in Colleción Poemas desde el fuego (Poems from the Fire), an anthology of twelve U.S. poets edited and translated by Margaret Randall and Maria Vázquez Valdez to be published by Quetzal León Calixto (Ediciones La Herrata Feliz) in cooperation with the Mexico Secretariat of Culture. The anthology will have national distribution throughout Mexico. The publication date will be either late 2017 or early 2018. This will be the first time Kenny’s poems will be translated into Spanish.
MFAW-VT faculty member Deborah Brevoort’s play The Women of Lockerbie has been translated into Italian and published by Trento University Press in Italy.
MFAW-WA faculty member Bhanu Kapil read/performed at ICA London and at Raven Row (an experimental art/social justice venue) , where she will also taught a charcoal and writing (anti-memoir) workshop.
One of the short stories from MFAW program director Elena Georgiou‘s forthcoming collection The Immigrant’s Refrigerator has just been published in the online literary journal Duende.
MFAW-VT faculty member Douglas A. Martin had an article in Out magazine. The article is about his appreciation/intro to writer and painter Denton Welch.
Alumni and students:
MFAW-VT alumna Julia Bouwsma‘s Midden, her second book of poems, was selected by Afaa Michael Weaver, for the Poets Out Loud Prize. Midden will be published by Fordham University Press in Fall 2018. Julia was our Alumni Visiting Writer in January.
MFAW-WA student Lydia Valentine has been selected as the 2017 Poetry Fellow for the Our Little Roses Poetry Fellowship. This fall, she will travel down to San Pedro Sula, Honduras and teach the girls from the Our Little Roses, the only all girl orphanage in Honduras, for a month. The judge for the fellowship this year was Luis Rodriguez, Poet Laureate of Los Angeles and founder of Tia Chucha Press. Lydia has also had her annotation focusing on the play Hands Up: 7 Playwrights, 7 Testamentsaccepted for publication in the HowlRound Blog of Emerson College.
Randy Baker, MFAW-VT alum, produced his thesis, Forgotten Kingdoms, at the Rorshach Theatre in Washington, DC, to much acclaim, including a review in The Washington Post.
MFAW-VT student Anne Boaden‘s essay “Order Up” will be published by NELLE! literary magazine of the University of Alabama at Birmingham later this year. It will be her first published piece outside of The Pitkin Review.
MFAW-VT alum Jarrett Mazza’s story “Afraid To Go” will be published in Bewildering Stories, an online journal.
