December was a big month for Goddard’s MFAW program with our alumni and faculty earning major kudos in the professional world!
This month The Silver Linings Playbook (shown at right), a Hollywood film based on Goddard alumnus (MFAW ’07) Matthew Quick’s thesis novel, was released by the Weinstein Company. Starring Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, The Silver Linings Playbook has won critical acclaim and is an Oscar contender. Kudos to Matthew!
Each year, United States Artists honor 50 of America’s finest artists with individual fellowship awards of $50,000 each. Goddard MFAW in Port Townsend faculty member Micheline Ahoronian Marcom was named one of the 2012 Fellows in Literature. Congratulations, Micheline!

Jeanne Mackin‘s new novel, Lightfall, will be published by NAL in 2014. She has also been invited to give a workshop at the annual Historical Novel Society Conference in Florida, and is reviewing books for their journal.

Randy Baker has been chosen to participate in the Arena Stage “Playwright’s Arena” program for emerging playwrights.
Ron Heacock’s story, “The Gun,” is going to be published In PaperTape Magazine, founded by Goddard alumna Kristy Harding (MFAW ’12).
Lizz Schumer’s “Toothbrushed,” a piece she wrote during her first semester (and later reworked), will appear on Slice of Life, an online, flash nonfiction literary journal. Additionally, her essay on the physical manifestation of mental illness will be printed in the Spring 2013 issue of bp Magazine.
Trisha Winn’s short nonfiction piece, “Editor Pants,” was published online by Citizens for Decent Literature. “Old Bill and a Howling,” a vignette, is being published by TOSKA in January. Peninsula College Press has just accepted her critical work, “Ecofeminism and Cultural Memory in Joy Harjo’s Poetry: Writing in ‘The Enemy’s Language'” for publication in their inaugural journal. And one of her “tiny truths” was featured in Creative Nonfiction’s November newsletter.
