Art As a response to Planetary Emergency

Although both had been feminist writers and peace activists living in Brooklyn, NY for many years, playwright Karen Malpede and poet/novelist Jan Clausen didn’t know each other very well until they spent a night in jail together following a civil disobedience arrest at the time of the Iraq invasion in 2003…


Kenyon Review has just published “Writing on: A Dialogue Between Jan Clausen and Karen Malpede.” Jumping off from the creative processes involved in writing Clausen’s Veiled Spill: A Sequence and Malpede’s Extreme Whether, which deals with climate change, the conversation offers perspectives on the possibilities of art as a response to planetary emergency.

The Board of Directors for Goddard College have made the difficult decision to close the college at the end of the 2024 Spring term.
