Goddard College and North American PEN Centers Partner for Creative Writing Scholarships

The Goddard College / PEN North America partnership provides one $10,000 scholarship to an MFA applicant in Creative Writing who is a member of PEN America, PEN Canada, or PEN Mexico.
Additionally, North American PEN members who are admitted to Goddard’s MFA in Creative Writing Program, but who do not receive the Goddard/PEN North American Centers Scholarship, will receive a one-time $2,000 MFA Goddard Engaged Artist Award. And any North American PEN members who are admitted to Goddard’s BFA in Creative Writing Program will receive a one-time $1,000 BFA Goddard Engaged Artist Award.
Elena Georgiou, director of Goddard College’s MFA in Creative Writing Program, explains, “We selected PEN’s North American Centers as our partners for this scholarship because PEN’s mission of championing free speech and the rights of writers is profoundly aligned with Goddard’s progressive education mission. Our program highly values the work of socially engaged writers and, therefore, offering the opportunity to PEN members is thrilling.”
These scholarships are intended to support writers in deepening their writing practices and completing a new book, play, or script, while obtaining a BFA or MFA. Goddard College’s low-residency model also removes the barriers between living your life and learning.
Each semester begins with an eight-day residency on picturesque campuses in Vermont or Washington. The residencies offer seminars, meetings with your advising groups, workshops, one-on-one meetings with an advisor, and presentations. Following the residency, students return home for 16 weeks of independent work in close collaboration with a faculty advisor.
Unlike traditional MFA programs, at Goddard you’ll receive more than 80 pages of editorial notes to help further your writing career – and you’ll join an engaged and vibrant community of writers.
The deadline to apply is April 15, 2018.
