As a Goddard College student, you can earn credits with a network of dynamic organizations that have partnership agreements with Goddard. You can complete courses and programs of study with these partners during the semester and on between semester breaks, in some cases earning additional credits directly applicable towards your Goddard degree and satisfying some wide knowledge distribution requirements. Talk with your adviser and Program Director about studying with a partner organization.

The Permaculture Institute of North America (PINA) has a network of instructors that offer the 80+ hour PINA- recognized Permaculture Design Course both in the U.S. and abroad. Successful completion of this course qualifies Goddard students to receive 2 transfer credits in natural science. Permaculture is a method of designing sustainable systems that are modeled on natural ecosystems and provide for basic human needs while improving ecosystem and social health, including justice and equity. Soul Fire Farm, in upstate New York, offers a course in Sustainable Farming and Food Justice that includes a one-week residential immersion on the farm. Students choose either the Undoing Racism Farmers Immersion or a Black and Latinx Farmers Immersion, and combine hands-on farming skills with reading, writing, discussion and applied learning on the politics of food. Students can receive one credit each in science and social sciences (for a total of 2 credits) upon successful completion of Soul Fire’s course.
Gaia Education, an international organization based out of Scotland, offers a 400-hour online Design for Sustainability Course (GEDS). The aim of the GEDS curriculum is to provide theoretical and skill-based learning in sustainable community design and development. GEDS coursework covers four primary, intrinsic dimensions of sustainability and human experience – Ecological, Social, Economic, and Worldview – plus a Design Studio. Each of these five areas of study may be taken on their own or in conjunction with one another for up to 400 hours of study and up to 10 undergraduate credits. Students can receive social sciences, math, life sciences, humanities and social sciences credits depending on what dimensions of sustainability they study.
The Institute for Social Ecology (ISE), based in Marshfield, VT and originating at Goddard in the 1970s, offers a flexible online introduction to social ecology course called “Ecology, Democracy, Utopia.” Goddard College students who successfully complete the course are eligible to earn up to three college transfer credits in social science at the undergraduate level. Students seeking credit must complete additional writing assignments and a project.
Yestermorrow, based out of Warren, VT has professional certificate programs that inspire people to create a better, more sustainable world by providing intensive programs with hands-on education that integrate science, math, design, and craft as a creative, interactive process. The certificate programs are four to 11-weeks long and students can qualify for between 4 and 12 credits. A $1000 grant is available toward this program.
