Engaged Artist Award

The Engaged Artist Award is given to newly admitted Goddard students who will pursue a baccalaureate or graduate degree in the arts and who are already engaged in their communities or professions as activist artists. Awards range from $1,000-$2,000 depending on the availability of funds.

At Goddard, we believe education is emancipatory. It is intended to help you understand cultural and other biases in your worldview and to facilitate your ability to participate in meaningful social change based on “an earnest concern for others and the welfare of the earth.”

Goddard students are asked to take intentional action to affect the world outside of themselves, either collaboratively or individually. John Dewey, among many, argued that education must include experience. Others since have referred to “praxis”, that is, putting theory into practice.

Who is eligible?

Individuals who have been accepted into the following programs are automatically considered for the Engaged Artist Award:

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Writing
  • Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing
  • Master of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts
  • Individualized Master of Arts

How are selections made?

Awards are granted in consultation with the Admissions office, program directors and program faculty where appropriate after a review of students admission file. A Selection Committee selects candidates for the Engaged Artist Award by considering the following questions:

  • Is the student a first-time applicant for admission to a particular bachelor’s or master’s program at Goddard College?
  • Has the student been offered admission into one of Goddard College’s degree programs named above?
  • Does the student have an emerging or established art or creative practice?
  • Is the student actively engaged in taking “some intentional action to affect the world outside of themselves?”
  • Does the student have a demonstrated financial need? Has the student submitted a FAFSA?

HOW TO APPLY:

There is no application for this award. The Selection Committee makes decisions based on the materials submitted in the Application for Admission.
