Goddard Scholarships

Goddard College is pleased to announce 100 $1,000 scholarships and grants for new students enrolling in the Spring 2012 semester. The awards are available on a first-come, first-serve basis to 50 undergraduate students and 50 graduate students. The three awards available are:

1. The Friend of Goddard Grant: for newly-accepted graduate students (not previously enrolled) who have a letter of recommendation from an alumnus, faculty member, program director, or staff member as part of their application for admission. (Program Directors and faculty can only recommend applicants to programs other than their own program. Students already admitted to graduate programs for Spring 2012 will have the opportunity to submit a recommendation to the Admissions Office to qualify for a grant.) Deadline to apply for this grant is concurrent with Spring 2012 degree program deadlines.

2. The Trustee Fellowship Grant: for newly-accepted graduate students (not previously enrolled) who have a letter of recommendation from a current or former trustee as part of their application for admission. (Students already admitted to graduate programs for Spring 2012 will have the opportunity to submit a recommendation to the Admissions Office to qualify for a grant.) Deadline to apply for this grant is concurrent with Spring 2012 degree program deadlines.

3. The Undergraduate New Student Scholarship: a need-based, $1,000 scholarship awarded to new undergraduate students (not previously enrolled). Need is determined by the Financial Aid Office and requires a completed FAFSA. The award will bridge an admitted student's “unmet need,” defined as uncovered expenses after awarding of Pell/SEOG or other aid. Deadline to apply for this grant is registration day.

Scholarships and grants are one-time awards to be applied to the Spring 2012 semester only. Students who defer enrollment for Spring 2012 will not be permitted to apply the award to future enrollment. Students who have deferred enrollment from Fall 2011 will be permitted to apply the award to enrollment in Spring 2012. These awards cannot be combined with other scholarship awards or waivers.

The Pearl Fund Scholarship - $1,000/year for 2 students

Given in memory of Pearl Fink by her children Janis Ian and Eric Fink. Pearl enrolled in Goddard’s Adult Degree Program at the age of 49, after having been in the workforce for several decades. Getting a BA was a lifetime goal for her. Pearl found her passion in playwriting, going on to earn a MA from Goddard at the age of 52 and writing a full-length play.

Criteria: Given to a student who demonstrates financial need and aspires to earn a first- time BA or MA degree and has either: a) been out of school for 5+ years, or b) has been in the workforce for 5+ years.

The Spirit of Goddard Scholarship for Returning Students - $1,000/year for 8 students

Created by several donors, the Spirit of Goddard scholarship supports Goddard’s commitment to progressive education and its vision for a diverse and inclusive academic community.

Criteria: Given to students with financial need, and who demonstrate a commitment to the mission of Goddard College (see application form).

Original Spirit Scholarship Donors:

  • Russ Bovit Memorial Scholarship – established in memory of Russ Bovit by his family. Russ Bovit found his intellectual and social community here during his four years in the residential undergraduate program. He was ethical, non-competitive, and he flourished in Goddard’s hands-on, progressive learning environment. He studied alternative energy, wind power, ecology and architecture and graduated in 1977.
  • GUSS Scholarship – established in 1995 by Piers Anthony and Carol Jacob, who attended the residential program during the 1950’s. Other contributions have been added to this fund; in particular gifts given in memory of Daniel (Bucky) Schling (BA, 1989) by his parents Phyllis and Joseph Schling.
  • Jack Lindquist Scholarship – established in memory of Jack Lindquist, Goddard's President from 1980 to 1990. Jack stewarded Goddard through a challenging decade and is credited with a major rescue effort. A scholarship was set up in his memory because he was very concerned about the rising cost of higher education for students.
  • Wagner Scholarship – a gift from a Trust set up by Jerome and Norma Wagner. Dr. Jerome Wagner believed in work-based education and that students should be challenged to learn about the American free enterprise system and its vital role in a strong economy.
  • Will Hamlin Scholarship – Will Hamlin worked at Goddard for 52 years, from 1948 to 2000. He served as faculty, dean, registrar and publications director. For many, he was the “embodiment” of the spirit of Goddard. When he retired in 2000, several of his former students and colleagues began a scholarship in his honor.

The Spirit of Goddard Scholarship for New Students - $1,000/year for 7 students and $500 for 1 student

Established in 2011 to support new students, the Spirit of Goddard Scholarship for New Students promotes the College's vision for a diverse and inclusive academic community. Criteria: Given to new students who have not previously enrolled at Goddard, with financial need, and who demonstrate a commitment to the mission of Goddard College.
