BA and MA in Education and Licensure Programs
My 35 years as a teacher, teacher educator, supervisor and administrator of schools have led me to believe that the best result we can expect from teaching is ongoing critical reflection grounded in life experiences and knowledge. And, that result is for both the teacher and the student.
I therefore create learning environments that build upon John Dewey’s thinking on reflective practice. Opportunities are provided for teachers and learners to think about what they are reading, doing, and the impact it will have in the lives of the children and the families with whom they will work. I never judge students’ thinking; rather provide lenses for them to further think about facts, life experiences, and application of theory to professional practice. My goal is to have students engage in ongoing critical reflection on their lives and how it affects their professional work.
I value multilingualism and diversity across race, class, ethnicity, gender, age, disability, and sexual orientation. This amalgam creates ripe opportunities for both students and me to reflect on an ongoing basis and widen our thinking on how we engage children and families.
In summary, my work with students and families is driven by my wanting to share a very rich life of engaging, fulfilling learning experiences. I encourage students to facilitate the same for the children and families with whom they will ultimately work.
