Goddard College is featured in Part Four of Freedom & Unity: The Vermont Movie, a six-part collaborative documentary produced by several dozen Vermont filmmakers. This documentary explores the history and contemporary culture of the Green Mountain State using cinema verite, personal stories, rare footage, compelling interviews and original re-enactments.

Part Four, “Doers and Shapers,” explores democracy at work—differing voices, different points of view—and the people and institutions that push boundaries. Beginning with education and the philosophy of John Dewey, the hands-on style of Goddard College, the Putney School, and the inseparable connection between education and democracy, and moving onto other progressive movements such as Vermont’s famous Billboard law and Act 250, cultural movements such as Bread and Puppet Theater, and finally Vermont’s groundbreaking civil union law.

The documentary features interviews with Goddard alumni, former staff and faculty, and includes archival photographs, video, and audio recordings. Alumni in the Vermont Movie are Clo Pitkin (BA RUP '53) Mason Singer (BA RUP '70), Avram Patt (BA RUP '72), Fred Wilber (BA RUP '73), Paij Wadley-Bailey (GEPFE '79), Dan Chodorkoff (BA RUP '71), Ginny Callan (BA RUP '74), and Dustin Byerly (BA RUP '01). Former faculty members are Mark Greenberg, Clo Pitkin, Mark Greenberg, Barry & Lorrie Goldensohn, and Former President Mark Schulman.

The Vermont Movie will be screened at over 66 locations in a Barnstorming Tour of the State beginning September 27, 2013. Goddard College will be screening a 23-minute excerpt of Part Four at the 150th Anniversary Homecoming Weekend, Oct. 18, 2013.
