I have been affiliated with Goddard for seventeen years, first as a faculty member and then as a Program Director. I continue to find it an enormous privilege to lead such a unique community of writers and learners. I believe that an individualized approach to the teaching of writing is the only truly effective way that writing can be taught, and I am deeply committed to the kind of transformational learning that is at the heart of a Goddard education.
My book, I AM THE WORD: A Guide to the Consciousness of Man's Self in a Transitioning Time, was published by Tarcher/Penguin in Spring 2010. I recently completed a credited rewrite of Truth In Translation, a musical about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission produced by South Africa's Market Theater and the Colonnades Theater Lab.
My work for the stage has been produced internationally and includes plays, operas, solo-performance work and text for dance. Recent work includes the stage adaptation of War Letters, commissioned by the Sundance Institute and performed by Treat Williams and Mario Van Peebles, the one-woman play Mystery School, performed by Tyne Daly and additional material for the national tour of Tallulah with Kathleen Turner.
My other plays include Terminal Bar, Moon City, and The Pompeii Traveling Show (NY Drama League Award). I wrote the libretti for a trilogy of commissioned operas with composer Kim D. Sherman, Red Tide, Long Island Dreamer, and Lamentations, and collaborated with Shapiro and Smith Dance Company on Notes from a Séance and Never Enough. I have performed as a solo-artist at the Ensemble Studio Theater, The Public Theater's Wake Up Call series and elsewhere.
My work is included in the anthologies Gay Plays 3; The Best American Short Plays Of 1996-97, The Best Short Plays Of 1988-89, Solo: The Best Contemporary Monologues Of The 80's, Cootieshots: Theatrical Inoculations Against Racism For Kids, Parents and Teachers, and American Dramaturgy: A Sourcebook.MFA in Playwriting, Yale University, School of Drama; BFA in Dramatic Writing, New York University, Tisch School of the Arts, Department of Dramatic Writing.
