One of the most exciting literary forms to emerge in the past thirty years, the graphic novel blends word and image, and encompasses all genres from creative nonfiction, fiction, and memoir, to fantasy and science fiction.

Susan Kim is the co-author with Laurence Klavan of two graphic novels. City of Spies (artwork by Pascal Dizin) received starred reviews from Publishers Weekly and Booklist; Brain Camp (artwork by Faith Erin Hicks), received a Junior Library Guild award and is a Scholastic Book Fair selection. Both were published by First Second Books. Susan’s nonfiction book, Flow: the Cultural Story of Menstruation (co-written w/graphic designer Elissa Stein) was published by St. Martin’s Griffin in 2009 and is currently in development as a documentary with Partisan Pictures. As a playwright, she wrote the stage adaptation of Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club (Dramatists Play Service) and numerous one-acts; her work has been produced across the country and internationally and is published by Smith & Krauss, DPS, and Farrar Strauss. As a television writer, Ms. Kim has been nominated five times for the Emmy and four times for the Writers Guild award for her work in non-fiction and children’s TV; she won a WGA award in 1996 for Best Documentary for Paving the Way, a PBS documentary on pre-feminism in the 1950s. Susan has been a Goddard MFA faculty member since June 2006. She lives in New York City and currently blogs for the Huffington Post.

Rachel Pollack has written thirty-one books of both fiction and non-fiction and published extensively in the field of graphic novels and comics, including Doom Patrol, Time Breakers, and New Gods. Her most recent graphic work is Genius, with art by Casey Columbus. Most of her fiction, which includes six novels and a collection of short stories, could be classified as literary fantasy. Unquenchable Fire won the Arthur C. Clarke Award in Britain, while Godmother Night won the World Fantasy Award. Rachel’s non-fiction books have included work on such areas as Stone Age religion (The Body of the Goddess); most of her non-fiction has centered on the symbolic interpretation of Tarot cards, a subject much larger than the popular image of fortune-telling. As well as creating her own deck, with images inspired by prehistoric art, she has written general books and books on specific decks, such as Salvador Dali’s Tarot, and was one of the prime designers (with Sandman creator Neil Gaiman) of the best selling Vertigo Tarot. Rachel has been a faculty member at Goddard since 2002.
