MA in Education and Licensure

School Counselor Licensure

The low-residency MA in Education and Licensure Program prepares its school counseling graduates to work together with teachers, administrators, parents, community members, and students to structure and facilitate learning experiences. School counselors collaborate with all members of the school community to help them enhance personal development and interpersonal communication. In most states the MA in School Counseling is recognized for the granting of school guidance certification.

Studies in school counseling at Goddard seek to apply the concept of comprehensive developmental guidance, which includes psychological education, human relations training, preventive mental health education, community education, and more traditional forms of individual and group counseling and assistance with career and academic planning.

Candidates who successfully complete Goddard’s approved licensure program receive an Initial Licensure in School Counseling through the State of Vermont.  While school counseling licensure does not have reciprocity in other states, the MA in School Counseling is recognized as the degree program  honored in most states for approval of the school counseling license or school guidance certification.  Non-Vermont candidates for school counselor licensure assume the responsibility of consulting with their respective state agencies.

Graduates of the MA in School Counselor Concentration are prepared to offer these services grounded in a vision of education as a means of personal and cultural development, with a commitment to helping young people evaluate and take responsibility for their own personal, educational, and career concerns.
