MA in Education and Licensure

Seattle Community Campus

Taking imaginative and responsible action in the world

Goddard now offers the low-residency Master of Arts degree in Education in Seattle, Washington as well as Plainfield, Vermont.  The west coast eight-day residency will be held at a Community Campus located in the Columbia City neighborhood in Seattle.

The MA in Education is a 36-credit hour program designed for graduate students interested in extending their knowledge in the field of education.  Students design their program of study in education with focus areas such as intercultural studies, dual language, early childhood, cultural arts, community education, or school reform.   Our model of learning includes a Spanish-English dual language approach with simultaneous translation.  Read alumni stories.

The program in Seattle will be offered in facilities that form the Community Campus: The Center for Linguistic and Cultural Democracy and Southside Commons.  While there is no housing provided for the residency, the campus is walkable and accessible by wheelchair or shuttle.  The Community Campus will serve as the hub for academic programs, community life, and administrative offices.  As the most ethnically diverse zip code in the United States, the Columbia City neighborhood offers a truly culturally and linguistically responsive environment.

The Goddard Education Program embodies a distinctive approach to educating current and future teachers, school counselors, and educational and community leaders. Faculty are dedicated to promoting progressive education through student-centered studies that are individualized, problem-based, inquiry-driven, and grounded in social justice and inclusion.

The Education Program is offered in a low-residency format that is well suited for adult learners. Students in the program develop an individual plan of study built around their chosen area of focus.  Each semester begins with an eight-day residency during which students form an intimate community of learners, attend workshops and presentations, and develop their semester learning plan.  Faculty advisors serve a small number of students, supporting students to identify interests and goals in the context of their lives.  Students complete their semester’s work in their home community.
