Evie Schockley

Evie Shockley is the author of two books of poetry: the new black (Wesleyan UP, 2011)—one of Library Journal’s Best Books of 2011 and an Honor Book in Poetry in the 2012 BCALA Literary Awards—and a half-red sea (Carolina Wren Press, 2006). She has also published a critical study, Renegade Poetics: Black Aesthetics and Formal Innovation in African American Poetry (U of Iowa P, 2011).  

Her poetry and essays have appeared in such journals and anthologies as African American Review, Contemporary Literature, Callaloo, The Nation, CURA, Harvard Review, Tri-Quarterly Online, Black Nature: Four Centuries of African American Nature Poetry, Contemporary African American Literature: Our Living Canon.

Shockley’s awards include the 2012 Holmes National Poetry Prize, a Leo Maitlin Fellowship from the Millay Colony for the Arts (2011), an American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Fellowship (2008), and a Schomburg Scholars-in-Residence Fellowship from the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture (2007). 

She is Associate Professor of English at Rutgers University-New Brunswick.
