Transformative Language ArtsFacultyLow residency MA in Individualized Studies faculty members bring the benefit of rich and varied backgrounds and interests to the self-designed work of their students. In addition, they bring specialized knowledge to the work of the program’s three concentrations. Below are some of the experiences that shape their knowledge in Transformative Language Arts:
Karen is extensively educated and experienced in educational drama, one of the sources of drama therapy. She is currently facilitating drama and art workshops with developmentally disabled adults at an arts center in her community and has directed a performing arts camp for people with disabilities. She has taught theater and related arts internationally for decades.
Francis is a Jungian scholar with an international reputation. He has studied extensively many perspectives on mythology, archetypes, Jungian therapeutic traditions and the origins of the oral tradition. He is also coordinator of the Consciousness Studies concentration, and helps interested Transformative Language Arts students develop the transpersonal psychology aspects of their work.
Ellie is a writer and artist with a background in many fields, including film and photography, philosophy, web design, garden design, psychology, cognitive science and the sciences in general, literature, disability studies, feminism, and sense of place. Her writing encompasses many genres.
Ruth Farmer has an extensive background in activism, writing, facilitation, teaching and administration. She has taught writing at various colleges and for many organizations, worked as a writing coach for a management consulting service, and developed and facilitated various community writing projects, particularly projects focused on social change. At Goddard, she helped design and taught in the BFA in Creative Writing, and has served as program director of the MA in Individualized Studies Program since 2008.
Along with his interests in environmental studies and place-based studies, Ralph has an extensive background in research methodologies, cultural identity writing, environmental and place-based writing, and critical writing. He is the author of many books and articles on environmental issues and environmental history.
Katt Lissard is a writer, director, performer and activist who has worked extensively in Lesotho, southern Africa, and in the theatre world of New York. As a resident artist, she has served as playwright, director, performer and program director at many theaters, and she's received multiple Fulbrights for her work in Lesotho, raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic through theater for social change. She also has a background in program development, grantwriting and related areas.
Caryn is the poet laureate of Kansas, author of 11 books (poetry, memoir, fiction, and anthologies), and a songwriter. Caryn has been facilitating transformative language arts workshops for two decades, working especially with women of color in recovery from addiction and abuse, cancer survivors, and adults in transition. She regularly trains nonprofits and businesses in group process and conflict resolution, and offers workshops for people on right livelihood and arts-based social change. Caryn is the founder and coordinator of the Transformative Language Concentration.
James is a clinical psychologist whose work draws extensively on narrative therapy. He has a deep background in contemporary poetry, often employing it in his psychotherapy practice, and in his work with Goddard students. He had published widely on literature, music and related fields.
Lise is a writer and literary scholar with specialties in women’s studies and spirituality. She has vast knowledge of and experience with the craft of writing, and deep experience with writing as a spiritual or artistic practice. She is the author of many articles and books, including memoir and fiction, and she is the founding editor of Trivia.
