BA in Education and Licensure

Requirements for Teacher Licensure

Students enter the low residency BA in Education and Licensure Program with approximately 60 liberal arts semester credits. The liberal arts credits need to be across the academic subject areas as well as meet the requirements listed below for the specific endorsement area. Students seeking licensure cannot have a criminal record or have ever been convicted of a felony, unless they seek a waiver through the State of Vermont.

 

Requirements to enter the teacher licensure aspect of Goddard’s Education Program include a GPA of 2.7 or better as well as the subject area requirements specific to each endorsement area. The liberal arts subject requirements to enroll in each endorsement area are listed below:

  • Early Childhood Education: (ages: birth-5, 5-8, or birth-8) Applicants are required to have completed 18-semester credits across the disciplines of English, mathematics, science and social studies
  • Elementary Education: Applicants are required to have completed 18-semester credits across the disciplines of English, mathematics, science and social studies
  • Art (grades: PK-6, 7-12, or PK-12): Applicants must have the equivalent of an Art major defined as at least 30 semester credits in the area, at least 9 of which shall be advanced undergraduate courses or higher
  • Middle Grades: Applicants are required to have completed 18-semester credits in the academic area at least six of which shall be advanced undergraduate courses or higher. (You can include one or two academic subject areas.)
  • Secondary English: Applicants must have the equivalent of an English major defined as at least 30 semester credits in the area, at least 9) of which shall be advanced undergraduate courses or higher. Secondary Social Studies: Applicants must have the equivalent of a Social Studies major defined as at least 30 semester credits in the area, at least 9 of which shall be advanced undergraduate courses or higher. Social studies courses include history, economics, political science and geography.

Licensure Application Process

Interested applicants must apply through the admissions office and submit:

  • A “Call to Teach” essay, describing your decision to become a teacher
  • Two letters of recommendation, at least one supporting your work with children
  • Official verification of passing scores on the Praxis I test in basic reading, writing and mathematics; or comparable SAT scores
  • Official transcripts of undergraduate coursework at the time of application.  Applicants may send in an unofficial transcript to be reviewed before submission of application to see if liberal arts requirements are met
  • A current Goddard undergraduate student must submit a letter of intent through the Academic Affairs Office, a completed application with no fee and satisfactory transcript review by the Education and Licensure Program.
