BA in Individualized Studies Program

Alice PhillipsAlice Phillips, MS

Faculty Advisor, BA in Individualized Studies Program

August/February Cycle Option

I am trained as a chemist, and am a practitioner of personal alchemy/transformation and multiple holistic health modalities. My view of the world is decidedly holistic. I believe that we are all inextricably interconnected, and that our ability to thrive depends on connecting with and honoring the innate wholeness in ourselves, each other and the planet.

This philosophy leads directly to my passion, which is exploring, sharing, and integrating the ability to live in balance on this planet; personally, professionally, and in relationship to mother earth. In my quest to actualize this philosophy, I have trained in holistic health modalities such as Acupressure, Brain Gym/Educational Kinesiology, Orthobionomy, Neuro-Link and Reiki, and I apprenticed with an herbalist and a homeopath in Great Britain.

While I was the Chair of the Science Division and Chemistry Faculty at a community college in Denver, I co-founded a unique Mind-Body Health Program in conjunction with the Chair of the Psychology Department. We developed and team taught courses in the Philosophy of Holistic Health, Biofeedback for Stress Reduction, Acupressure, the Chemistry of Herbal Remedies, Living Green, and many other topics of interest to our students and community at large. We served a diverse community with students from over 120 countries speaking 90 languages, bringing a rich diversity of philosophy and culture to our program.

Science provides a lens for viewing the world. This lens need not exclude intuitive, whole brain thinking. In fact, it is my belief that all of the great scientific discoveries which were quantum leaps came from a place of deep intuitive insight, combined with the scientific method of test and verify, test and verify.

The ability to discern the validity of an argument based on the scientific perspective is imperative whether we agree with or disagree with argument, as it takes us out of the role of passive recipient of information and give us a framework for thinking clearly and consciously about the issues which we deal with as individuals and inhabitants of the planet.

This skill supports whole brain thinking and provides a powerful added dimension to our intuition regarding life’s issues. It is my privilege to support learners as they integrate the scientific perspective within the framework of their passions.

Educational Background: BS in Chemistry, minors in Math and Biology, MS in Chemistry with minor in business.
