Sustainability at Goddard
To respond effectively to the ecological challenges of our time, the Goddard community works to transform the activities of the college and the consciousness that informs them in order to support sustainability. Our work encompasses all aspects of the college, from our student-centered educational model, to management of the 134 acres of fields and forests that make up the campus, improvements to the infrastructure and historic buildings that house college activities, and reducing the greenhouse gas emissions created during college operations.
Goddard's Climate Commitment
As a signatory to the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment, Goddard is progressing through a series of steps to reduce carbon emissions and increase sustainability. A sustainability team made up of staff, faculty, and students completed an initial carbon inventory in 2007 that showed college operations produced about 1973 tons of CO2 in that year. We began working to reduce emissions with an initial focus on increasing energy efficiency through retrofitting buildings, and in the fall of 2009, a second carbon inventory showed that we used 12% less heating oil and 13% less electricity in that year than in 2007, even with increased use of the campus.
We have set a goal to reach carbon neutrality by 2020 by switching to renewable heating fuels and generating some of our electricity with photovoltaic panels. Our complete Climate Action plan is posted on the Presidents Climate Commitment website.
We have been reducing consumption and waste and improving efficiency in all areas of the campus. Each building or cluster of buildings has an “eco-rep” who works to increase awareness and reduce the use of resources and energy in that area. Paper usage has been reduced through virtual storage and double-sided printing. Bottled water has been replaced with water filtering units. Incandescent bulbs have been replaced with compact fluorescents, timers and motion sensors have been installed to eliminate unnecessary lighting, and we use the 50% green electricity option offered by Green Mountain Power.
The Goddard cafeteria provides a place for students, faculty, and staff to meet and share daily meals. The Goddard Food Service gets fresh, organic produce through the farm to table program at Food Works and from the campus greenhouse and garden in season. Goddard has joined other colleges in participating in the Meat Free Mondays movement, making all meals served on Mondays meat free. All food wastes are composted and used on the property or distributed to farms.
There are ride share boards for students, faculty and staff in the internal campus Internet system. Video conferencing is being used to replace some travel.
The Goddard campus is located in a rural area of central Vermont on a former farm estate that includes 134 acres of meadows and forests and an abundance of wildlife. Goddard cultivates its relationship with its natural surroundings through participation in a USDA Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program to develop and improve wildlife habitats, protect wetlands, remove invasive species, and improve soil quality.
